Features of Miki Hardware Knife

With the development of wooden architecture, the demand for knives became higher and higher, and in Miki, in the 2nd year of Kanpo (1742).

Manufacturing process

1Steel making

Cut the steel to the size of the blade.

2Making iron

Process iron (soft iron, kettle) to the required size.

3Forge welding

Work to join iron and steel. Apply a bonding agent to iron, heat it to a high temperature (1000 to 1100℃), and hit it with a mallet to bond it.


Heat the forge-welded material to heat (800-900℃) and forge it with a mallet to form a shape.

5Shaping(fire making)

Make a shape with a mallet on the anvil.


The structure of steel disordered by forge welding and forging is placed in a furnace heated to 750℃ and slowly cooled to spheroidize the structure.

7Back out

Shape it with a grinder or the like.

8Back sharpening

Shape it with a grinder.


Engrave a trademark, etc.

10Leveling smoothing

Make the back while hitting with a mallet.

11Strain removal

Work to remove the distortion caused by the smoothing.

12Rough finish

Shape it with a grinder.

13Mud coating

Apply mud (abrasive powder) so that the quenching is evenly performed.


Work to harden steel by heating it to 780 to 800℃, soaking it in water and quenching it.


Heat to 180℃ to make the steel sticky.


Correct the distortion caused by quenching.

17Back sharpening (baking back sharpening)

Work to polish with the buff on the back side.


Attach a blade using a rough whetstone, a medium whetstone, and a finishing whetstone.

19Finish distortion removal

Remove the distortion caused by finishing.

20Sheath attachment

Finally, attach the sheath.
